Marissa's Battle With Brain Cancer

Hello friends and family, my name is Katrina Strash and I created this page to raise money for my dear friend, Marissa Gaslan and her parents.
As some of you may know, Marissa experienced a seizure during her Junior year of high school in 2015. It was determined she had a brain tumor and it was surgically removed that December. She underwent surgery again six months later in 2016 when new tumor growth was found. Marissa received proton radiation at Loma Linda Medical Center in 2018 and eventually, chemotherapy at the UCLA Pasadena Clinic in 2019. This year Marissa has been receiving treatment at UCSF and commutes to and from San Francisco and Chino Hills multiple times a month. Recently, UCSF discovered Marissa had new tumor growth along her frontal lobe and the right side of her brain. She went through yet another surgery and the doctors diagnosed her with Stage 4 brain cancer.
Marissa is now at home with her parents Darryl and Milasol resting before heading back up to UCSF for more rounds of radiation and chemotherapy. Future trial treatments may be determined with the help of City of Hope by further analyzing the recent extracted tissue from her brain.
As you can imagine, the cost of transportation to and from UCSF, along with hotel expenses and uncovered medical costs are quite large for the Gaslan Family. Additionally, one of Marissa’s new medications has cost the Gaslan’s around $1,200 a month. Your donations will go directly to the Gaslan Family to help cover these expenses. The Gaslans have always treated me and other swimmers like family and I created this page to show how much they mean to us.
I have been a close friend of Marissa’s since we were 6 years old and have watched her stay incredibly positive throughout her 4-year struggle with brain cancer. Marissa and I met at the Chino Valley Dolphins swim team and later moved to The Claremont Club swim team together in 2010. She is an Ayala High School alumna and was a collegiate swimmer for a little over a year at the University of Indianapolis prior to returning home for more treatment.
Marissa, we love you so much. You are so strong and we are here to support you every step of the way. And remember: God has a plan for everything.
