Invitation to sponsor the creation of new textile artworks in France by artist and designer
Janell Wysock
This June 2016 Janell Wysock will travel to Ateliers Fours Winds situated in the breathtakingly beautiful and visually informative landscape of Southern France.
This will be the first opportunity for her to create her work in a European setting.
Ateliers Four Winds is an artist colony, which provides studios and accommodation for artists to be inspired by the colors and light of Provence. Set close to the les Alpilles mountain range near Marseille the area has inspired artists for centuries including Cezanne and Van Gogh. The community is welcoming her with open arms and she has already been invited to be an esteemed guest at an art exhibition opening at the Van Gogh Museum and gallery which, will provide an opportunity to network and generate more opportunities whilst there.
Biography of Janell Wysock:
Exploring the use of traditional and contemporary materials in textile design is Janell Wysock’s foremost passion. Graduating from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, at the top of her class, she has continued working with her love of yarns and up-cycled materials through her business Janell Wysock Textiles and through teaching at her studio under CRAFTspace Philly. As a contemporary knitwear designer, she uses her studio and boutique as both an experimental place to design and create. Her current knit wear line and the vibrancy of her handmade tapestries act as a counterbalance of inspiration for each other. Janell also uses her studio as a site of learning where she teachers students various wearable textile art practices under the name CRAFTspace Philly. A teacher at Mount Saint Joseph's Academy in Philadelphia, she is interested in bringing the soothing and meditative qualities of craft to people in need. As a teacher she has taught Senior Citizens, women at risk and youth. She will bring a wealth of knowledge to the contemporary art field, which is a new arena for her to explore.
What will Janell do there?
At Ateliers Four Winds Wysock will weave synergistic large-scale weavings for exhibition. Sitting in the Provence landscape will be an enriching experience for her, as she will be able to respond to the colors and textures of Southern France. Imagine creams, and browns with hints of lavender and olive branch tones woven into portable looms that Janell has had a craftsman make and will bring from the USA. Janell will undoubtedly respond to the landscape that will bleed into and set her on an inspired path for years to come. This process will be documented, and the videos will be projected in a subsequent exhibition. She will also have the opportunity visit museums, galleries and studios of local artists during her time in Southern France.
