On February 29th of this year I went to run some errands while I was working in Georgia at my Grandparents' store. The next thing I remember was a paramedic holding me down and telling me that I had been in an accident and if I did not stop moving, I could lose my leg. I had rolled my vehicle multiple times and nobody knew why or how. My phone was in my pocket and no other cars were in the accident. I still have no memory of anything before the accident.
I spent several days in the ICU and a total of two weeks in the hospital. My list of injuries was long; an open fracture of my tibia and fibula, six broken ribs, multiple facial and skull fractures, and six fractured vertebrae. After a week the swelling had subsided enough to perform the two surgeries that have allowed me to keep my leg. The surgeon knew that he could repair the bones but he told me that he was very concerned about the wound healing. Thankfully, the wound has almost healed completely and there are no signs of infection. I have had a lot of help from so many people. It started with the paramedics, nurses, doctors, and surgeons and has continued since I've been home with the amazing friends and family that have helped me in so many ways. The doctor says that in a couple of weeks it will be completely closed and I will be able to finally get into a pool. I've been lying in a bed for almost two months and can't wait to get into the pool and move around!
In the two months since the accident, I have been slowly getting better. I am still in a lot of pain and I have to use a walker to get to the bathroom. I still cannot put any pressure on my injured leg. Hopefully I will be able to start physical therapy on my leg in the next month or so. A trip to the doctor's office is about as far as I can go right now and that usually wipes me out for a day or so.
Now that my leg is doing better we have changed the focus to getting my back better. A few weeks ago I started to have more pain in my back than I had had in more than a month. I had an MRI done last week and it shows three herniated discs, damage to the ligaments in my spine, and a “teardrop” fracture of one of my lumber vertebrae. The neurosurgeon says that I am going to need surgery because the discs are pressing on my spinal cord. He says that if I was to get into another accident I could be paralyzed.
Although I have health insurance, there are a lot of expenses that the insurance will not cover. I need surgery to repair the discs, a custom brace for my back, and I am getting stem cell therapy as well. I know that so many of you have been wanting to know how I am doing. And I thank you in advance for any help that you can give me and my family to help me get better. Those of you who know me know that all I want to do is get better and get back to work! Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Ryan Ives
