Hi! My name is Jaycie Cohen. I'm graduating from Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach in May 2016. I am a Theatre Major interested in directing.
When I was an infant I appeared on the soap opera, The Guiding Light. I loved to sing and dance and pretend. Perhaps it was in my genes. My grandmother was a professional dancer in vaudeville and on Broadway. My mother was cast in a Broadway show and did many print ads and films as a child.
In the past 6 years I have acted in fifteen theater productions. I have also directed five shows.
In elementary school I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia. Later I was diagnosed with dysplasia (my legs were growing at different lengths). Then I was diagnosed with Von Williebrand Disease a bleeding disorder. I was sick a lot so my Mom (a retired teacher) began homeschooling me. Next I was diagnosed with several life threatening illnesses. CVID, a disorder that impairs the immune system and leaves me susceptible to recurrent infections. I would receive an IV infusion of immunoglobulin weekly administered by a nurse. I now administer the infusion myself. I had surgery on my leg to slow the growth plates and allow my other leg to catch up and I was diagnosed with auto immune disease (Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis). The medication had serious side effects including weight gain. Most recently I was diagnosed with gastroparesis and I'm awaiting placement of a gastric stimulator in my stomach.
I have good grades in high school (3.3 GPA) even though I missed a third of my classes due to illness.
Stetson is the only university that is willing to work with me and my disabilities.
I have applied for many scholarships and received over $20,000. Unfortunately I am still $23, 000 short for the year. I need to raise funds ASAP.
I believe that dealing with my illnesses, school and extracurricular activities has been great preparation for a career directing theater. I am totally dedicated to theater. I REFUSE to allow my illnesses to prevent me from achieving my dream of becoming a Broadway Director. That's just who I am.
It has been said that if you are doing something you love it is not work. When I am involved in a theater production I find a way to push through my illnesses because creating a show is something I love.
I would be so gratefull to everyone for helping reach my goal to attend Stetson University and I will invite each and every one of you to my first Broadway Show and treat you like the VIP's that you are!
Thank you.
