Roommate Stole Rent & Left Country
Donation protected
On of our leaseholders left town in late April for spring break vacation. Instead of taking her return flight back to NY, she took another flight to a different city, then confirmed the receipt of rent from another roommate in order to pay for May. At this point, she had her portion, in addition to rent portions for 2 (one is sublet) out of 3 other roommates.
She then, cut contact with everyone, including family and used the money to travel and is now residing in Quebec. It is nearly 3 weeks later. Since she has gone missing, we have uncovered a lot of things that were being kept from us that concern the security of our living arrangement.
My roommate and I have been struggling with this matter while trying to finish finals as we are grad students. We have already found replacements for a new lease as we cannot take it on right now.
Our landlords have told us that if we cannot cover the remaining rent in the next week, we will be evicted on the 1st. As QPoC it is hard to get such a nice and affordable apartment in Brooklyn, we would hare to lose it and our money die to the theft and negligence of someone we trusted and who was contractually obligated. We are asking for any donations that could help us cover the remaining $2,725 in rent (that she took off with) so that we may continue having a safe and welcoming place to live.
