Assault victim’s Dental Costs

On July 6th, our daughter was in the wrong place at the wrong time. After watching a movie, she and her best friend went out for a walk on a beautiful hot summer evening. They met up with another couple of friends and went to a park to hang out. While there the four of them were approached by a belligerent man who wanted someone to pay for his Uber. When all the girls said no, an argument ensued. The male suddenly threw a full glass bottle of juice at one of the girls. She ducked and the bottle struck our daughter in the face. She had to be taken to hospital and received emergency surgery on her mouth and teeth. They had to close the wounds, re-implant her two front teeth, and reposition a third tooth. She was advised to see a dental surgeon. We did this as soon as we could, but as she couldn’t open her mouth because of the stitches inside, we were told to come back when she had healed enough to open her mouth fully. He was unable to properly examine her at this time. Since then, she has seen a dentist/oral surgeon an additional four times. We have explored all possible scenarios to repair the damage. The best case scenario was for the teeth to reattach and begin to grow. This would mean minimal work and cost. The second scenario was to do root canals and crowns. This would have cost about $8000. Unfortunately all three of her teeth have died leaving the worst case scenario. She requires three implants and crowns. This is the most expensive option and will cost an additional $17000.
This is in addition to the $1500 she has already spent in her 5 previous visits to the dentist.
Our daughter has no dental insurance. She has applied for victim compensation from the Attorney General and should get $1000 through this fund. Unfortunately this is the limit that this fund will pay. Our daughter has been on her own for several years and hasn’t very much savings. We are also not in a position to pay a bill this magnitude. The man who did this to our daughter is a known felon. Two days prior to this incident, he had escaped house arrest and stolen a vehicle. He had also shot a man. This man later died of his injuries. While our daughter was being operated on in the hospital, he shot another man in the leg.
This man has been featured on CP24 and there is a Canada wide warrant out for his arrest for first degree murder.
Our daughter has suffered great mental distress and is in counseling to deal with the trauma. She was off work for almost a month and therefore lost income. We are appealing to you for any help that you can provide.
In July, she was optimistic and she raised a little over $3000 for what she hoped would be the total expense. Unfortunately time has shown the error in that thought and we are in need of another $14500 to fund the remainder of the dental work.
Thank you!
