Abeg Kon was a beautiful, loving and big-hearted soul. During her short time with us, she dedicated her life to make others feel loved. She always put others before herself.
On Sunday, Sept 5th, 2020, Anjelo, Bernadeta and their two children lost their beloved daughter and sister to suicide. “No one in our family realized that behind Abeg’s big smile was so much pain” -older sister. Two years ago, Abeg had the courage to come forward and let her parents know that she had been bullied. Her parents did what every parent would do. They went to the school to seek support for Abeg and assuming the bullying would stop. It did not. The school failed Abeg. The bullying led to cyberbullying, which then led to Abeg becoming so terrified to leave her home. The school and CCSD failed Abeg.
For the Kon family losing their daughter and sister so quickly and unexpectedly has left them in absolute shock and despair. “We are traumatized. Our community is traumatized.” -Abeg’s family. At school Abeg was quiet and kept to herself but, when she let you in was when you could see the beautiful bright spirit she had. Her love for others was like no other. She wanted a career in environmental work. She loved nature. She wanted to volunteer in non-profit work. She wanted to become a model because the world had finally begun to be diverse. She like many of our children had hopes and dreams and now she won’t be able to live them.
Due to Abeg’s sudden death, her family is now facing financial hardship with funeral cost. Through this page we not only want to support the Kon family with laying their daughter to rest, but we want to bring light to the bullying epidemic. The effects of bullying are lifelong. We would so appreciate it if you could share this page with the hope that what happened to Abeg never happens to your child, your sister, your friend or anyone ever again. We hope Abeg’s story is met with compassion, understanding and generosity. We would also like to draw light to the issue of suicide and hope that this page reaches someone who may be feeling like there is no hope and we would like to let you know that there is.
To anyone feeling as if Suicide is the only option, please reach out. Your life has so much value and purpose so we encourage you to speak to someone who can help you navigate your journey. There is hope…. We promise.
