Oliver's Back Brace

This is Oliver: my beautiful 2 year old nephew. Oliver has been diagnosed with thoracic lumbar kyphosis. Kyphosis is a close relative of scoliosis but instead of an S curve he has a C curve. Oliver had a 58 degree hunch from his T10 to L5. What that really means is he needs to wear a back brace for 16 hours every day until he stops growing.
Children who recieve treatement at Oliver’s age have been shown to have long lasting and almost complete improvements with the use of the correct brace. Unfortunately, the longer Oliver goes without a brace the less optimistic we can be about his treatment. He may suffer complications that will be with him for the rest of his life. The condition isn’t just affecting his physical body, it is causing learning delays and may affect socialisation. If he gets the brace he needs, Oliver can expect to build a strong back that will last him a lifetime. He should be able to play sport, to correct his learning delays and have no physical restrictions when he enters the workforce.
But, Oliver’s brace is not covered by Medicare. If he is going to get the correct brace his parents must come up with just over $3,000 every time Oliver grows out of his old brace. My brother and his wife love Oliver very much, but they have two small children, home expenses and all the medical bills they have been dealing with up until now. My brother's Army pay, Medicare and NDIS should be enough to look after his children but it isn’t. Without help they can’t afford this vital piece of medical equipment.
