Dr. Femi Jeje, fondly called 'Jeje', which is the Nigerian pidgin English colloquial for 'calm' got involved in a ghastly car accident while serving as a medical doctor in a Nigerian rural community during our second year after graduation from med school. Here's his story:-
"I was involved in a road traffic accident on 31st of August 2012, I was compreseed by the car, all my long bones were broken except my left humerus. Since then have been to the theatre 8 times, there were times I had multiple surgeries at once. I had a set-back last December- I had non-union of my right femur, the implant broke inside which caused a lot of pain. I had a repeat surgery to fix it after Christmas last year, and have since been at home recuperating.
It has not been an easy ride, I’m in my darkest phase of my life which has been more prolonged than expected. My left leg is shorter than my right leg and I cant bend my left limb.
These can be corrected by surgery but it’s an expensive procedure with the cost of 2 million naira. This is the surgery that could take me back to my pre-accident state or fitness."
2 million naira is about £7000 with the current exchange rate.
