Morgan Gamble's Accident Expenses
Donation protected
On April 27th, Morgan Gamble, a high school senior, experienced a life-threatening accident during a free 7th hour at school. She and one of her best friends were hammocking in the school court yard. She had her hammock connected to a concrete pillar, 12 ft tall, approximately 28" in diameter and weighing more than 2 tons. Having been there for many years, anyone would think it was secure. But it was not. The pillar fell, landed on Morgan's pelvis, crushing it, then rolled down her legs, breaking her right tibia in three places. She suffered a large laceration on her left thigh from the pelvis bone breaking through the skin. Morgan had other injuries, internal bleeding and was in and out of consciousness. By the time she arrived at the hospital she had lost six units of blood. (Due to heavy rains, the ground was soft and when the pillar fell on Morgan she was pushed about 10 inches into the ground, which saved her life.)
Morgan has undergone eight surgeries and many life-threatening events since the accident. She is stable now and on the road to recovery. The trauma team said she will not be able to bare weight on her legs for possibly three months. Her next step is rehab just to learn transition moves and basic life skills.
The family has insurance but with a fairly steep cap. After the initial stay at the rehabilitation center, her physical therapy is extremely limited. She will need physical therapy for several years to regain her strength and the ability to walk normally. The family needs help with the insurance cap for the next few years and the extra physical therapy that will be needed. One of the most frustrating things about this situation is the school system has a small cap of what the insurance will pay. Once all the insurance companies go after what they want there will be very little left over for Morgan. Her mother is a teacher at the same school Morgan attended and her father is in sales. They are a frugal family and have scraped and worked hard to come up with almost two years of college costs. The extra expenses are really effecting the family and their finances.
Morgan has always been an active young woman. She was co-captain for Varsity Pom, Vice President of student council, president of Eagles for Christ and involved in a large variety of other positive activities. She has worked since she was 13 years old and already had a job lined up for the summer. In the fall Morgan's plan is to attend the University of Oklahoma. Due to her injuries and several years of physical rehabilitation, her plans to work during college will have to be set aside.
All funds will go directly to accident related expenses including a handicap assessable vehicle that she will need for several years for physical therapy and for college, medical expenses not covered by insurance, and lost wages.
Our family deeply appreciates any and all help during this challenging time. Morgan is a very hard worker and we want to see her excel through her college life as she learns to walk again.
