25 Years Since Meningitis- Walking To The Portland Hospital
My name is Olivia, and on January 8th 2025, it will mark 25 years since I survived meningitis. On January 8th, 2000, at just 8 months old, I was rushed to the Portland Hospital in London, critically ill with bacterial meningitis and was in the ICU for 2 weeks. The first night I was in hospital, the doctors told my parents they weren’t sure if I was going to make it through the night, but thanks to the swift action of the incredible and selfless team at The Portland, they administered the correct dose of antibiotics that saved me from passing away within the hour.
To commemorate this and to give back to the community that helped me survive, I’ve challenged myself to walking from my home in Bushey, Hertfordshire to The Portland Hospital, London on January 8th, 2025, which will be a 13.5 mile walk. This walk is going to be a personal milestone but also a fundraiser for Meningitis Now, an organisation that has been close to me and my families heart for many years.
Previously, I had the honour of being a Young Ambassador for Meningitis Now, and I have seen firsthand the incredible work they do to support individuals and families affected by Meningitis. I aim to raise both awareness and funds to support their mission.
All I ask is that you support Meningitis Now in any way possible, whether that is a donation, sharing my story, spreading the word about Meningitis or by joining me along the way on my walk.
Thank you,
Olivia x
