Samaritans is the only charity in Ireland offering emotional support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for anyone who needs someone. We have been supporting people in Ireland since 1960 through our phone helpline, email and face-to-face support and outreach in the community. We have had millions of potentially life-saving conversations over the past 60 years.

We deliver the Samaritans service through 21 local branches on the island of Ireland (13 in ROI and 8 in NI). Each branch is run independently by a network of volunteers, with support given from the Samaritans Ireland office staff on Usher's Quay, Dublin.

Throughout my teen years, I struggled a lot with my mental health, my self-esteem, and my self-worth but in late 2013 - early 2014, I was personally going through a very difficult time. It was not a quick or an easy decision for me to search for help at the time (and over the years). I believed that I didn’t need support, that my problems, my negative thoughts would all go away on its own and I also believed that I would be wasting someone’s time if I did ask for help.

In Spring 2014, I came across Samaritans on the internet, and I had noticed that they had different ways I could reach out to them, but I decided to use their walk-in service. I travelled to the Samaritans branch in Limerick, it took me a while to build up the courage and knock on their door, but I did eventually and asked if there was someone I could speak to. I was feeling extremely anxious beforehand, but the staff were so welcoming and reassuring, offering me tea as they showed me to one of the private rooms where I waited to speak to a volunteer. The walk-in process was so easy, simple and stress free.

I spoke with a lovely woman called Margaret, and it was a huge relief to have had someone to talk to, to have had the support for those few hours. During my time with Margaret, there was no rush, it was however long I needed to talk/stay for. As well as that, was all confidential, non-judgemental and it was for free. I didn’t realise at the time but that was a very important step for me, I needed to talk, and I am so thankful that their doors were open.

The funds raised will help volunteers to be able to offer their life saving support to those who really need to talk and who are struggling with their mental health, just like they helped me all those years ago. Especially during these difficult times.

Sejare Adult Respite House is in operation since May 2008. It is based in Annacotty and its part of the Daughters of Charity Disability Support Services, Lisnagry, Limerick. It provides respite for people over the age of 18 years, with an Intellectual disability Staff strive to provide a familiar, comfortable, safe community based and homely environment for the Service users that attend the Facility. The Vision of care in the house is to provide the best care that we can which respects the Individual’s needs, beliefs and dignity of each service user, their families and staff taking into account the ethos of the Daughters of Charity Service.

Jasmin is my younger sister and she was diagnosed as being on the ASD spectrum from about 18 months of age. During the early years, Jasmin was always very happy, easy going and extremely affectionate. As she grew older and especially in her later teens, her moods could fluctuate affecting her behaviour patterns. It was always a challenge trying to organise a normal day to day routine, requiring a lot of planning for basic everyday activities to ensure there was no upsets. If Jasmin was experiencing a crisis, our plans had to be quickly adapted to cope with the unexpected change.

In 2014 Jasmin was offered a placement at the DOC Lisnagry day services, and before long had settled quite well into a daily routine. Attached to the DOC services is a respite facility called “Sejare House”, a converted bungalow in Annacotty which offers respite to parents and families that are caring for a family member with additional needs. They have a fantastic, very professional nurse led team on hand and offer the best care possible. What they offer is a much-needed break for families so that they can relax and not have to worry about their family member. At the facility they treat all the service users with respect and genuine love, as well as days out, walks in the park and even simple trips to the shops. The care and support that Jasmin received there was invaluable, not only for herself, but for us a family too, allowing us to have some semblance of a normal family life, and we will be forever grateful to Sejare.

This is my opportunity to help Sejare Adult Respite House by helping to raise much needed funds towards the purchase of a new specially adapted minibus for their service users.

I am extremely honoured that I get to support and raise awareness for these two incredible charities and on the day of the event, I will be passing by both the Samaritans buildings (in Ennis and Limerick), and Sejare Adult Respite House in Limerick, along my cycle and running route.
This is a very special event to me for so many reasons, and it means the world that I am getting the chance to do this.

100% of the donations will be split evenly between Sejare Adult Respite House and Samaritans.
Any donation, no matter what amount, is greatly appreciated and if you could share this page that would be amazing and again, greatly appreciated. :D

Thank you all so much in advance,

Jade and the Hoynes family.
