AJ's- Surgery & Medical Needs
Angelo was born with Achondroplasia,
which is the most common form of dwarfism and occurs 1 in every 13,000 births.
From birth he had to fight since his delivery did not go smoothly and after
aspirating he was placed in the NICU for the first day of his life. The doctors
prepared us for the worst as they warned us of the myriad of possible
complications associated with his primary diagnosis. From the beginning God had
a plan for him and for us as his family. Through his health struggles we were
made stronger in our faith.
Angelo has had several complications
that directly relate to his condition. He is currently followed by seven
different specialists, and receives weekly occupational and physical therapy.
In his brief seven years on this earth he has had a total of 9 surgeries. While
some were fairly simple and common procedures such as ear tubes, adenoidectomy
and tonsillectomy, others were much more complicated. Due to Spinal Stenosis (a
narrowing of his spinal column)which caused nerve damage, he had needed to have
two cervical spine decompression surgeries (at 7 months old, and
18 months old). Because of this nerve damage and overall muscle weakness
it is difficult for him to do many activities other children take for granted.
Small things like walking, jumping, and riding a bike are difficult feats for
him.
Despite the hopes that no further
surgeries would be necessary, Angelo is now facing a third spinal surgery. He
will be undergoing a lumbar laminectomy and spinal fusion in an attempt to
alleviate the weakness and incontinence issues he is experiencing.
Besides the mounting medical costs, there
will be numerous trips to and from the hospital, housing and travel expenses. Angelo
has been fitted for a custom wheelchair to enable his mobility post-surgery,
and the car will need to be fitted with the equipment to transport the wheelchair
as well.
Those who know Angelo have been won over by
his very mature personality, and his zest for life, and laughter. Angelo has inspired many people with his
tenacity to overcome obstacles and circumstances because of his stature and the
many physical challenges he daily faces.
He recently made a decision to ask Jesus into his heart, because"
he wanted Jesus to be his best friend, so he would know he was going to heaven."
Keep Angelo in your prayers, keep the
doctors in your prayer, and the family. We trust and know with hope, that God
has a purpose for Angelo's life. thanks for your prayers and help!
