Send Nyah to Princeton This Summer!

Hi, my name is Nyah Johnson and I am a rising junior at McKinley High School.

This spring, I was honored to be selected to  attend the prestigious At the Well Young Women's Leadership Academy at Princeton University . At the Well seeks to empower young women to become effective leaders globally by promoting excellence in education and nurturung young talent to transform their communities. Students at the academy will  participate in Leadership Development workshops, standardized test preparation, financial aid/scholarship boot camp, job skills training, and college level courses taught by Princeton faculty.
Over the past two years, I have already begun to seek out numerous ways through which to impact my own community of Baton Rouge, LA.  In addition to being a fellow in the Baton Rouge Youth Coalition, a program designed to prepare high-achieving students for post-secondary success, I am also a member of the Mayor Kip Holden’s Youth Advisory Council.  As a council member, I help plan community events that raise awareness for health, education, and neighborhood pride. More broadly, I do my best to represent the concerns and ideas of the students of Baton Rouge to the mayor and his staff. I have also been active in leadership roles at my school, serving on both the McKinley High School Youth and Government Board and a Student Ambassador. In these roles, I engage in critical debate on social and political issues, participate in Model United Nations and Youth Legislature, and serve as a liaison between incoming students and families to my school.
While balancing all of my involvement, I have managed to still stay focused on my school work and maintain a 3.7 cumulative GPA.
