Assistance for a COVID-19 Survivor

Thank you to our donors and our readers. My mom is a diabetic and she has been for over 20 years, we have been working hard together to turn things around in order to help her have a better and healthier quality of life. My mother caught COVID-19 December 2019 and has been suffering from long term side effects of it . We moved from NYC last year and this was when many people were mysteriously getting sick, but the doctors we unable to figure out what it was because this was not the flu. They thought she had RSV, and after many many test, we found out she was positive for COVID. She was hospitalized for an entire month. Was on so many different machines to help her breathe, and was as swollen as ever due to her kidneys having a hard time battling the virus within her. They told me that mom had end stage renal disease and they were contemplating starting her on dialysis. They also informed us that mom had three clogged ventricles and they needed to perform a heart bypass which would help her body a great deal with all of the fluid retention and extend her life by about ten years. Mom was so swollen, the bottom of her feet cracked open, there was a big crack under her big toe. This wound never healed, due to peripheral vascular disease. It soon became infected and the doctors decided to amputate. They wanted to amputate because they did not want to risk getting any infected blood to her heart before and after the surgery. Her heart surgery took place in June and it was a success, however, her foot was not healing the way we needed it to. After being in agonizing pain for many many nights, her surgeon decided it would be best for her, if he amputated again, but this time, up to her calf. Mom protested and only allowed him to cut straight across her foot which just leave her with half of her foot, her heel and her entire leg. The surgery was done and while she was recovering from the surgery, she showed up positive for Covid-19 in the hospital. Not only was mom battling covid, but I caught it as well because I was with her a few days prior to her testing positive. Mom had tested negative three times since she had been readmitted so we know she caught it in the hospital. While mom was battling covid all alone in the hospital, I was alone too. Working from home, sick, trying to ensure that we didn’t lose our home. Mom was placed on a ventilator the day after her diagnosis due to her drs finding her unresponsive in her hospital room, she went septic. They had her on 3 blood pressure medications in order to save her life.(these medications caused my moms fingers and toes to turn black). She was sedated for 2 and a half weeks while I fought my mild case of covid. When mom woke up, she had lost her voice and the ability to walk. She could barely use her hands and was incontinent, for some reason, her lower muscles were extremely weak She was not walking, so I was lifting my mom up off the bed and putting her back in. Due to mom not being able to climb stairs, we’ve had to apply for a new apartment in a different apartment complex. Even after explaining what happened with my mother and I, my landlord did not try to help us or make the move easier. He is charging a total of $1700 for us breaking our lease and charging us fees for him having to prepare the apartment for new prospective tenants. Mom also needs a home health aide to help her when I am not home. With all of the new expenses, it’s extremely difficult to stay caught up on our bills. It became difficult when we had to move to a new home. It was already hard enough on us with my mom being uninsured, we have been waiting to hear back from disability for two months now. We know she qualifies but we are drowning while we wait for federal help. I’m 25 years old and I’m trying my hardest to take care of my mom and myself. With her being disabled and not having any help, the burden on me has been very very heavy. We have hospital bills from the prior amputations and her heart bypass, we haven’t seen anything from her being hospitalized with covid but who knows what the future will hold. It’s been a struggle to get groceries in the house and to get myself to and from work. Since starting this go fund me, my mom was admitted into the hospital again, and she lost the rest of her leg, up to her calf. Now we are dealing with that, and needing to get a prosthetic for her leg. We have had a rough year but we aren’t going to give up any time soon, we thank any person that finds it in their heart to stop by our page and donate what they can. You have played a huge part in our goal to make my moms life better. We’re taking it one step at a time. And will be praying for better days.
