Help Sarah Go to Haiti!

Because of lack of safe, timely medical care, many women and infants die before, during or after childbirth in Haiti.  A constant stream of volunteers arrive in Haiti monthly to help in the clinics and bring in safe, clean supplies, as basic as Tylenol.  

Since meeting Nadene, it has been a dream of mine to be able to volunteer my nursing skills and spend a week in Haiti.  I finally have my chance!  I have been extended an invitation to volunteer with a local Richmond doctor in Haiti from May 11th-18th, 2013.  It is my hope that my friends, family and their friends will help me reach my goal of raising the money to spend the week helping the women and children of Haiti.  For $1500, I am able to spend a week in Haiti with safe housing, meals, translators and transportation, along with airfare.  I will also be accepting donations for supplies to fly down with me, including basic over the counter drugs like Tylenol and Ibuprofen, prenatal vitamins, etc.  

From the MFH website:  "The chances of dying from childbirth in Haiti in 2010 were estimated by the WHO as 1 in 28, mostly due to pregnancy-induced-hypertension, eclampsia, sepsis, and postpartum hemorrhage."

It's hard to imagine living with those statistics here in the United States, where it's more rare to die from childbirth than to live through it.
