Amy needs our help! About a month ago she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in her right breast. Amy is self-employed and has minimal health insurance. Unfortunately with the type of cancer that this is, her doctor has recommended that she have a double Mastectomy. This would be fine, however insurance only covers the breast that has the cancer in it, it will not cover the left breast also. Amy is being held responsible for this and any other treatment that comes along with that left breast. She will also not be able to work for at least six weeks.
Amy has been my best friend since the fifth grade. She is one of the kindest most giving people that I know. She has been through a lot and I don’t want her to have to worry about the financial side of all of this while she’s battling the cancer.
I have asked her to give me as much information as she can about what is going on so that you can all get a better idea.
1 year ago Amy went in for a lump the size of an egg in her right breast.
After sonograms, mammograms and biopsies it was determined to be a complicated cyst with abnormal cells. She was put on a 6 month watch at the Clark's comprehensive breast center.
She went in April for her 6 month check up, the cyst was back, but smaller. The Dr and her decided " it was just a cyst" we will let it be and She was released to come back in a year. Less than 4 months later it was the size of a baseball. She went in with much encouragement, after sonograms, mammograms, and more biopsies She heard the 3 words No one ever wants to hear, " You have cancer".
Though we caught it early, the Dr. Said we caught it early but we need to act fast. Stage 1 was her diagnosis, however her MRI showed the cancer is much larger and stage 2.
Now she Is scheduling MRIs, EKGs, pre- op for surgery, physicals, blood work, more sonograms, more mammograms, x-rays etc...
Plus working because she is self employed, and trying to keep up with life it self.
Her surgery is Oct 12th with a double mastectomy, after they remove the breast and test the tissue, lymph nodes etc. Then they will know what kind of treatment She will need, such as chemotherapy, radiation or a hormonal Cancer treatment.
Full recovery is at least 6 weeks.
