Rembering David J Flynn and supporting a LEGACy

Donation protected
My father, David John Flynn, passed away this Monday, November 9, 2020. Even as I and the rest of my family deal with our grief, we're also rejoicing in all of the wonderful stories that people are sending us of the ways my father affected them in their lives. Please read our full dedication on him, which was posted on his website: http://www.flynndj.com/sadnews/

In order to honor him we chose two charities to support. This GoFundMe is for the first one, the Learning Exchange for Global Associations and Connections, Inc. (LEGACy) which is a Non-Profit that my father helped me to found in January of this year. LEGACy , Inc is based here in Jupiter, Florida. We are a non-profit helping to promote international exchange between students in Kyoto, Japan and Jupiter, Florida.

In 2014, members of Sagano High School in Kyoto, Japan traveled to meet the teachers and principal of Jupiter High School. They met and discussed the possibility of an exchange program. They decided to formally visit Jupiter High School in January of 2015 with an initial group of 8 students.

During this trip, my father was the bus driver for the 8 students. There was no way we could have afforded the program in that first year if we had had to hire a private driver. He drove them all over South Florida, having fun, telling them jokes and teaching them about Florida. He gave them each an Everglades quarter when they left. He wanted to be the bus driver every year, but I convinced him that he should help me start this Non-profit and take on more of an advisory role.

In the fall of 2015, Sagano sent its first fall semester study abroad student, who became an exchange student at Jupiter High School from August to December.  Again in January of 2016, 6 students traveled to Jupiter High School. Finally, in June of 2016, it became a mutual exchange program when 4 Jupiter High School students traveled to Kyoto for a 2 week exchange program.  They brought with them a declaration from the Town of Jupiter, Florida, declaring that Sagano and Jupiter High Schools were to be thereafter called "sister schools".

Since then every January (including this year before the COVID shutdown) a group of Sagano students has gone to Jupiter and every other year a group of Jupiter students has gone to Sagano High School. In the fall, Sagano High usually sends a student for a long term study for the fall semester at Jupiter High School.

However, the future of the program is in jeopardy. Sagano High School has lost its funding support program and the cost of airfare continues to rise year by year. Now, with COVID, of course the program has been suspended indefinitely, but we are hoping in the fall of 2021 we can send a long-term student and in January of 2022 we can have our 2 week program again.

This program and this non-profit were started because of the generous support from my father. He believed in it. If you would like to commemorate him in this way, please donate to this GoFundMe. All of the money will be donated to LEGACy, Inc. to support scholarships for the exchange program so that Jupiter and Sagano students can continue to learn from each other into the future. Together we can make a more globally connected world.
