Help restore the C&O 1309!

Donation protected
Built in 1949, the C&O 1309 steam locomotive was the last built by Baldwin Locomotive Works for domestic use. The engine had a brief run hauling coal in southern West Virginia before the diesel locomotive became a more efficient locomotive and it was retired in 1956.

C&O 1309 resided at the B&O Railroad Museum until it was acquired by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) in 2014. WMSR is now in the process of restoring the locomotive, with hopes for it to return to service in 2017. When restored to service, the locomotive will be the largest of its kind in operation on the East Coast. It will pull scenic excursions through the Allegheny Mountains of western Maryland.

WMSR is a non-profit organization based in Cumberland, Md. This project is dependant upon outside funding and donations to see it through. Funds raised will be used to rebuild the engine, which includes staybolt installation, as well as cab, wheel, and electrical work.

Restoring C&O 1309 to service will help benefit WMSR in many ways, from increasing traffic to the railroad and the area in which it is located to paying employees and experts to complete the project. It will support adminstrative staff and allow the organization to create a premium tourist experience for its many guests.

If you are able, please donate to this campaign. WMSR's staff will be very grateful for any help received.
