Hello! My name is Anjana, and I am a Graphic Illustrator. My family and I moved to Azerbaijan in the late 90’s all the way from a small town in India known as Lonavala. At birth, I was diagnosed with Myelomeningocele, a common form of Spina Bifida which has led me to having to undergo several surgeries as a toddler. Unfortunately, none of the surgeries have been effective which resulted in me staying confined to my wheelchair for the rest of my life.
Regardless of this however, I have never allowed my disability to break my spirits and I have always made an effort to better myself and compensate in a way, for my physical shortcomings. I managed to enroll in school at the age of 12, when I was no longer in need of paying regular visits to the doctors. I was an academic student that took a great interest in humanitarian subjects such as History and Literature. However, I never strayed away from my artistic capabilities and was professionally trained for 7 years in the field of Fine Art. This opportunity allowed me to host 3 solo exhibitions in Azerbaijan over the years. Although I enjoyed learning, due to my family’s financial difficulties, I had to drop out of school and start working at the age of 18. Even though this was not something I wanted to do as I always wanted to pursue my further studies in the field of Advertising, I complied and actually ended up enjoying work.
However, I would be lying if I said it has not been difficult. Despite of my upbeat personality and willingness to learn, I have issues commuting in Azerbaijan due to the lack of accessibility for folks that use wheelchairs like myself. This has resulted in me having to use taxi services because public transport in Azerbaijan is not wheelchair friendly. Not only have I ended up spending a fair amount of my wage on transportation alone, but I also found myself having to request anybody ranging from my family, friends and colleagues to help me complete simple tasks in the city such as visiting a grocery store – Something a 22-year-old should be able to do on their own with or without a physical disability.
Apart from the lack of accessibility, I have had several issues finding jobs that I could see myself flourishing within where I can be rewarded fairly for my potential as an employee. A large portion of this issue stems from my lack of an undergraduate degree. Hence, after using the past four years of my life to gain practical knowledge, I want to apply theory to it and finally pursue my dream of studying advertising.
I have applied to MIUC (Marbella International University Center) and have been successfully admitted to their institution for an Undergraduate degree in Marketing and Advertising in Malaga, Spain. My years of work experience, eagerness to study, and artistic talents greatly helped me get admitted to one of the best universities in Spain. However, as I am somebody that comes from a family that has been financially struggling for the past few years, plus was negatively affected by the pandemic, I am unable to afford to pay my tuition fees and start a new life in a country that is wheelchair-friendly.
Hence, I would like to request you to help me start living a life where I will no longer feel tied down by my disability and lack of a higher education. Every penny donated will be appreciated and will be going towards my tuition fees and living costs in Spain.
Once I acquire my degree in Marketing and Advertising, I intend on using my knowledge to help improve my social business concept that I have been working on for the past few months. With my degree, I intend to build relations and perhaps a team that can then assist me in the act of fighting for the rights of minorities and underrepresented groups in developing countries.
If you have taken out the time of your day to read my story and donate, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your help will not go unnoticed!
