Make a difference
We are raising funds to hold a self-advocacy conference for people with learning disabilities across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Through our existing groups and networks, it has become clear that the pandemic has had an ongoing negative impact on people with a learning disability and their ability to speak up for themselves. During the extended lockdowns, people with a learning disability did not have access to the usual community and social interactions. These are the things that support people to maintain their well-being and ability to communicate effectively. Many people with a learning disability have told us that they have lost confidence in their skills and are reluctant to get back out into the community because of this. We want to put on a conference to support people to regain their skills and give them the confidence to speak up for themselves again. The day will be full of fun, inspiration and positivity. We will have speakers, workshops and fun activities that will allow participants to create new friendships and networks and rebuild the skills that may have been lost during the last two years.
