Helping Heather Heal

On August 5, our good friend and neighbor, Heather Stupay was transported by ambulance to Silver Cross Emergency Room. She had abdominal surgery on July 21st and was having complications upon returning home. Despite multiple return visits with the Dr her situation seemed to only worsen. It ended up that Heather had a perforated bowel and was diagnosed with sepsis. She was immediately transported to Good Samaritan Hospital to see a specialist. Upon arrival the specialists immediately put her in a medically induced coma so they could try to figure things out.
After that she stayed in isolation in the ICU. She underwent multiple surgeries to try to stop the toxins from attacking her body, as she was in septic shock. The Dr said if she had waited one more day she would not have survived. She was then transferred to the ICU at Loyola University Medical Center to be seen by more specialists.
Heather has been fighting every day to get better. She is being fed through an IV and her stomach has 4 drainage tubes.
Her open abdomen must be cleaned and repacked every day, along with a wound vacuum, in order to help her body to heal.
Heather has graduated to the RML Specialty Hospital. There she is continuing to heal while also working daily with PT and OT to learn to walk and move again. During this time, because of the pandemic, she is unable to see her family or friends. Her husband, Michael, is physically disabled and at home trying to hold everything together. He's working hard for their 3 children just trying to keep things as normal as possible for them. Cara (17 years old) is leaving for college in a week, Jr (13 years old who is on the Autism Spectrum) and in 8th grade and Alex (10 years old who has kidney dysfunction) is in 5th grade.
As you can imagine it is very difficult to be away from your family for such a long period of time.
As most of you know Heather is a Reading Specialist at Walker School in Summit Hill School District, the District her sister, Jodi Reyes, is also a teacher at. She is dearly missing being with her coworkers and working with her students. Heather is a dedicated teacher who loves her students and does whatever she can to help her school district. She is currently running out of sick days and may eventually be on disability. We are setting up this page to help offset the medical costs and loss of pay that this will cause them. We want to help the Stupay family in any way possible!
Thank you for your prayers, support, and generosity. It means so much to their family!
