On June 1st, 2020 my son (David) Isaiah Lard was the victim of a hate crime in Tacoma, WA (coincidentally the day of the BLM protest) Followed and cornered in a parking lot with his cousin who is a minor, Isaiah was attacked by two people in a large pickup truck-blocking him in, refusing to let him park. He exited his vehicle to speak to the driver, but before any exchange of words Isaiah was hosed in the face with an industrial can of bear mace. Fearing for his life Isaiah retreated to his vehicle, only to find his cousin, who is 17 years old also maced and blinded, screaming for help. Defending his life and his cousin’s, Isaiah was able to successfully stop the attack, without injuring anyone (only injuries sustained were chemical burns to his face) and had to flee for his safety in his car, blinded by bear mace. (Miraculously, he made it safely back home, dripping with mace) unfortunately, for defending himself and his cousin, he is being charged with two accounts of Assault 1, which carry a punishment of up to 25 years each. Isaiah did not run, but obtained private counsel and voluntarily turned himself in. He wishes to fight these unjust charges, which amount to a simple case of self defense. Before the pandemic and subsequent shutdown, Isaiah was registered at Pierce College for the upcoming spring quarter. His goal was to take an EMT course, on the path to becoming a firefighter. He enjoys being a father to his 2 year old daughter, playing sports, and has committed his life to service. I am writing this in hopes of raising enough to cover his lawyer fees, which sit at 15k currently. Isaiah has spent his last to obtain his lawyer, and has only unemployment to rely on to take care of himself, and his daughter until he can go back to work, as he is high risk for complications of Covid-19. Our goal is to keep another life out of the penal system that was designed to incarcerate young men like himself. Thank you to anyone who is reading this, all prayers and kind words are welcome as well. Thank you #BLM #covid #covid19 #blacklivesmatter #father #dad #girldad
