My name is Kent Hamre – a basketball coach, 8th grade PE teacher, and an avid (poor) golfer.  I have started this GoFundMe site for my 15 year old niece, Sydney Scott and her family.  Sydney is one of the strongest, bravest, sweetest kids I know and is very special to our family.  In 2010, Sydney was diagnosed with Germinoma, a cancerous germ cell tumor, in her brain.  As you can imagine, this turned the Scott family upside down as they spent the whole summer in Oklahoma for Sydney's radiation treatments.  Since that time, Sydney has been doing well; getting yearly checkups to make sure everything is ok.

In May of 2016, after a second abnormal MRI in two years, Sydney and her family learned that the Germinoma tumor has developed in her spinal cord and the cancer is back.  Up until this point, Sydney’s annual follow-ups had been going well and there was no indication of concern.  Through additional MRIs and spinal taps, it has been confirmed that she will again need chemotherapy and radiation treatment.  Sydney’s parents, Brad and Tricia, had the most difficult task of all when they had to tell Sydney and her younger brother, Tyler what is taking place.  As expected, the reaction was one of disbelief and immediate concern.  The family is as optimistic as anyone would be at this point that the treatment will be successful, and yet with life turned on its head again, they are forced to be cautiously optimistic.  Sydney has begun preparations for her treatment and chemotherapy on June 13th at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.  Her chemo is expected to be anywhere from 16-20 weeks, depending on many variables that will only be known after her second week of treatment.  Sydney will also undergo radiation, most likely at the Mayo in Rochester, MN.  We will update this GoFundMe site often, but you can also follow her progress via her parents’ updates on her caringbridge site

Unexpected expenses will likely occur during this journey, while Brad and Tricia also take time off of work.  The cost of gas traveling from their home in Breezy Point to Minneapolis/Rochester, food, parking, and most importantly extra care and activities to keep Sydney and Tyler cared for and providing somewhat of a normal summer will quickly add up. Tyler is a very energetic teenager who has autism.  Having to watch his best friend and sister go through these struggles is difficult for him.  Any amount you are able to give is a blessing to the Scotts, but most importantly, they want Sydney lifted up in prayer so she can beat cancer once and for all!

The Scotts have never asked for help and probably never will.  We feel a bit helpless and have struggled knowing what to do, so we’ve created this site to do whatever we can.  This is already a very stressful time for them, our hope is to alleviate some of the financial burden and allow them to have some normalcy and fun this summer while living this nightmare.  Thank you in advance for your support and continued prayers!  Sydney, stay strong  and brave.

Love you,

Uncle Kent
