Send Sachem Students to JHUMUNC!
Donation protected
UPDATE!: Hello everyone! Thanks to all of your donations, as well as excellent support from our advisor, Dr. Afxendiou, and stellar fundraising, nine delegates were able to attend the JHUMUNC conference in February 2014. History was made when two Sachem delegates were awarded Honorable Mentions, an unprecedented feat in Sachem Model UN History! We are very excited to announce our JHUMUNC 2015 campaign, which will help send our now renowned-team to the conference this coming February! The students will be accompainied by our new advisors, Mrs. Victoria Cangelosi and Mr. Michael Klein! Please read below for more information on our club and what we do! If you can, please support our students, and give them the experience of a lifetime! Thank you!
Greetings! We are Sachem North High School's Model United Nations Club! Our club, founded by Dr. Georgia Afxendiou, is an active participant of the Model United Nations, a simulation of the actual United Nations. Our students regularly attend conferences in our area, where they separate into various committees to debate and hopefully resolve pressing real-world issues such as HIV-AIDS, international security, women's rights, access to medicine, pollution, and much more. Our program has been lauded by parents, students, administrators and local public figures alike, and we strive to provide the best program for our students.
In 2013, however, our school district's budget was slashed by the state, resulting in the highest tax increase in nearly a decade. We are very happy to have had our club reinstated but all our support from our building and our district is lost. We are doing our best fundraising within our building but we need more help.
Every year, the club selects eight members, based on their skills and position papers, to attend and debate at the annual Johns Hopkins University Model United Nations Conference, also known as JHUMUNC. Even though members are expected to pay their way to this conference, the Sachem North Model United Nations Club has always worked with the philosophy that all students, irrespective of financial backgrounds, should be able to attend this great experience that financial restraints should not be allowed to segregate the experience of club members. So we have always fund raised to make the trip accessible to all.
If you can, please donate for a great cause. Learning does not just occur in the classroom. The Model United Nations is a truly rewarding experience to all involved, and the club has remained a citadel of Sachem academia for over seven years.
