Im a 22 year old trans/nonbinary lesbian who’s taking care of my grandparent on my own. I’m in this position because both my grandma and I were both homeless just 7-8 months ago squatting at a friend’s house. The environment we were in was becoming toxic and we were essentially kicked out by the friend we were staying with. I had to find housing fast and luckily got us the apartment we’re in now. However, I’ve had to put my aspirations and life on pause essentially due to the pandemic and because I’m a caretaker. I’ve been throttled into a position that was completely unfair to me and have lost jobs and opportunities for the sake of trying to save my grandma from homelessness and trying to survive. I’m also being underpaid for only 20 hours a week by my home health agency currently so, we’ve been living pay check to pay check and it’s been extremely difficult keeping up with rent + utilities and other house resources as well as trying to save the money to move into a place that’s more accessible to my grandma. I want to put both me and my grandma in better situations where we’re happier and safer and healthier. My sibling now has a more physically accessible space in their apartment to take care of my grandma with their partner. And, my goal is to move out and explore the opportunities that I haven’t able to due to trying to survive after being homeless for years. I was homeless on and off since 2016 after I was kicked out of my mom’s abusive household and had to experience lots of violence, trauma and assault on my own while couch hopping. Moving into my own apartment/space will help me heal and start my life with a clean slate. I have untreated adhd and also have desires of going to school, getting a therapist and maybe even transitioning but I can’t do any of that right now because I’m not in the environment to do that and don’t have the means to do so. This process feels extremely isolating because I’ve been doing a lot of this on my own and it would mean so much if any of you could help me reach my goal. I would like to move out by the fall at latest but ideally by the summer.
