Mike is an 18 year old from Fenton, MO, on May 18, 2016 he was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street. He recieved several very serious injuries, including: fractured tibia, fubula, femur, scapula, sacrum, C2 vertebra in his neck and three ribs. His left leg required two surgeries to repair and the large bone breaks caused fat emboli to travel to his brain causing multiple strokes. He also sustained a stage 3 diffuse axonal injury to his brain during the accident causing very severe wide spread brain damage. Mike is going to require long term therepy, rehab and care for the rest of his life. He now has a trach and requires oxygen at all times, this will hopefully change soon. He was comatose for three weeks after the accident and odds were against him waking up. He spent a few days in a vegitative state and now is showing signs of awareness. All of his achievements are much more than what was expected and we thank God every day for giving us our son back. He is unable to communicate, has no purposeful movement and is not able to follow directions. He has however shown appropriate emotional responce to situations which tells us that he is awake and processing things in his brain. He will have a long recovery period but we are willing to work as long as it takes to help him achieve his maximum ability.
As a high school student Mike still lived at home with his mother (myself), stepfather and three siblings. Sadly this home is not handicap accessible and therefore Mike will not be able to return home with his family until a lot of changes are made. Wheelchair ramp needs installed, doorways need widened, carpeting needs removed and flooring replaced with either low carpet or smooth flooring, bathroom needs expanded with tub removed and handicap shower installed. Medical equipment such as wheelchair, hospital bed and mechanical lift will also have to be purchased. On top of all of the home improvements required to bring Mike home are the ever mounting medical expenses and ongoing rehab and therapy costs to come. I (his mom) have been with him every day at the hospital and have rarely left his side which has decreased our household income significantly making the chances of having the home improvements completed even lower. The sooner we can complete all of the needed changes the sooner our family can attempt to get back to "normal".
We have been lucky to have a lot of people praying and thinking about Mike throughout all of this and we are forever greatful for all of the positive thoughts and energy sent his way. We are so thankful for any help we can get at this time. Anything that will help us bring our son home is appreciated more than anyone could ever know. There are not enough words to thank everyone for their support during this time.
