Diabetic Alert Dog for Acie
Donation protected
On September 16, 2016 it will be 2 years since Acie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This is not a day that I want to celebrate but it definitley is a day that needs to be acknowledged, because on this day our whole world changed. I always heard about Diabetes but I really never paid much attention to the disease. Why would I? It didn't affect anyone in my family. Now I feel so much remorse for not having more empathy for person's that suffer with illnesses. You really do not know what pain others may suffer from and I'm sorry that I was so naive.
Diabetes is a life threatening disease. It is complicated, ugly, painful and hard. Anything can affect your blood sugar-carbohydrate intake, weather, stress, puberty, illness, etc...
So why I am here...Acie had an appointment today and her A1C is 8.45 which is good but we need to get her to 7.0 and keep her there so she does not suffer from the many devastating issues later in life (neuropathy, heart disease, blindness). She was told that if she can not get control of her levels than she will need to move to a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and daily injections. Currently she wears an insulin pump (see pump on her leg in the photo). She loves the flexibility this provides her. The thought of her coming off the pump brings my poor sweet child to tears. Unfortunately, she does not want to wear the pump and the CGM at the same time because it means 2 sites and more pain.
So I am coming here to ask for help...I have researched Diabetic Alert Dogs for some time. They are able to alert if your BG falls below 70 or before it goes over 200mg. This is amazing...I often wonder how a dog can do this but to give my child the opportunity to be free of mechanics would be simply a blessing.
It costs about $15000 to train a pup to adult to be a diabetes alert dog. All the funds will go directly to raising money for Acie to get herself a service dog. As she gets older it will be harder for her to recognize lows and an alert dog can be life saving. If all my friends and family can donate $25 we would be in a good position to at least choose the puppy and begin it's training.
We would like to purchase a French Brittany because they are super smart and medium in size. I have owned French Brittany's and they are excellent companions and would make a great service dog.
My goal is to have her a working dog within the next 9-10 months. The company I am working with Diabetic Alert Dogs of America are flexible in payment schedules and will begin searching for the right match as we continue to raise funds. Please check out their website if you have any more questions...

Asking for help is not something I am comfortable with but I really want to help Acie and make her life a little bit easier and I have to turn to my army for help.
