Hello dear friends and family, old and new, near and far! I have been offered a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in this world and I need your help!
I have been privileged to work alongside a very reputable, very passionate professor, Nicole Crane. Nicole is my professor in Plant Biology and Ecology, as well as a dedicated conservation scientist. She has been heading a project with her team called 'One People One Reef' for several years now, and they have recently implemented a Youth Outreach program, hence why I get to go!
The aim of ‘One People One Reef’ is to provide the native peoples of Micronesia, specifically those around the Ulithi Atoll and the outer islands, with community-based scientific awareness to issues like, climate change, typhoons, and fishing practices that are damaging their ocean ecosystems.
The organization works alongside the Chiefs of these remote island villages in order to better understand how science they are uncovering can not only aid but complement the villages' traditional practices using the resources they have relied on for hundreds of years.
The Youth program is hoping to bridge the gap between the young people of these villages and their elders. These islands are their homes, and because the young people are given opportunities for education that their parents and grandparents were not, they see their homes much differently. This disconnect is making it difficult for the elders on these islands to get the younger generation interested in what is happening to their reefs and why it is so important to maintain the ecosystems.
Last year was the first year that Nicole and her team brought undergraduate students along to work with them, as well as the youth on Ulithi, to share why we as young people are interested in this work. It was a massive success. The Chiefs have reported seeing immense changes in the youth that participated last year, and they have an even larger group expected to join in June.
Your donation will help me cover the cost of day-to-day expenses throughout my 20-day volunteer experience, as well as travel costs.
