Bridget and Kathy are determined to compete in the two handed division of the 2022 Sydney to Hobart yacht race. on Kathy's recently purchased yacht Currawong.
Neither thinks that advancing years are any reason not to embrace significant, even daring challenges, and are prepared to take on the risks and rigours of a tough ocean race for the thrill and love of adventure. Between them they have 95 years and thousands of sea miles of sailing experience, including Sydney-Hobarts, but as a retired teacher and a nurse, not much in the way of financial resources.
The boat is a strong seaworthy and well-equipped fibreglass yacht, built in 1973. The 30' Peter Joubert design is a classic, and Currawong was the first out of the mould. Kathy bought her for a modest sum last year, and in January sailed her, two-handed, from Melbourne to Sydney, safely coming through storm force winds in a thunderstorm.
Even for a two handed small, pre-loved boat there are significant costs in just entering the race. Big ticket items include a measurement certificate for handicap rating, insurance, entry fees and safety compliance. New sails, and some deck hardware are on the wish list if we are to be in race trim.
Would you like to help us get to the start line? We'll take it to the finish!
