India: The door to a bright future

“They don’t care that you know until they know that you care.”
-Dr. Stephan Ray Mitchell, the dean of Georgetown University Medical School
I was very fortunate to be among the delegates chosen to be a part of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Leaders, and the experience changed my life. The quote above is just one from the amazing people I was exposed to during the conference. Through his quote he tells us that if you do not care about the people you are treating, than this is not the career path for you. It’s not just about your knowledge, but the care and compassion you have for everyone you meet. You’re not just curing diseases; you’re making relationships. And I want to care, and I want to make relationships.
My name is Caiya DeVerna Schuster. I am a sixteen-year-old who is entering my junior year of high school and through this conference, I’ve been inspired. From a young age, I have always dreamed of being involved with medicine and now I know this is the only path for me. Through this conference, I was given the opportunity to embark on a life altering journey. I have the opportunity to go to India for 18 days and work with the practicing physicians there through the UMI, Ultimate Med Internship. When I heard of this opportunity, I was extremely happy. The only complication is the cost. But I am determined to go; there is nothing I have wanted to do more than go and help. This would be a dream come true! I am trying as hard as I can to pull it off, but I need help. Any donation would be greatly appreciated to help support my dreams which are to serve, to provide comfort, and to become a medical leader. Thank you so much!
