Greenland for the Gathering Place

First completed by arctic explorer Fridtjof Nansen in 1888, this expedition is often described as one of the "Big Three" polar journeys - along with the north and south poles. The trip begins August 17th in the community of Isortoq and concludes in Kangerlussuaq - a distance of approximately 540km. The expedition will take approximately one month to complete.
As a native Newfoundlander, one major goal I have in completing this ski expedition is to raise awareness and funds for the Gathering Place - a community center in St. John's, NL. The programs and services are offered primarily to people who are homeless or live in less than desirable housing conditions, people who are often unemployed and to people who do not have adequate social supports at this time in their lives. I'd like to assure those of you who are considering giving to this campaign that 100% of your donation will support and further develop programming for those who are most vulnerable in society. This expedition has been fully self-financed with personal funds. The fund raising campaign will end September 20 - my anticipated completion date.
Many of the Guests at the Gathering Place have complex issues ranging from physical illness and mental health problems to learning disabilities and addictions. Guests are victims of abuse, income support recipients, or are low income earners. Having fallen through the cracks of the social welfare system, this center provides a vital service to its guests.
The goal of Gathering Place is to foster among guests independence, self-respect and dignity. Further, interdependence and personal growth are cultivated through a network of community partnerships.
Please consider giving what you can afford to help those in greatest need. There are many wonderful causes in the world, but this one is particularly close to my heart. Any contribution you make would really mean the world to guests of the Gathering Place - and to me.
