Melissa's Battle Against Cancer

Melissa Dempsey Comeaux is my best friend who is one of the most caring and giving people that I know. She is the mother of four, 3 of them are still living at home. The oldest is 27 and going to bless Melissa with her 1st grandchild in September. The other three are 17, 15, and 5.
After having a hysterectomy, Melissa was in horrible pain and went to her local emergency room. Her insurance did not cover this visit because they didn't consider it an emergency. This bill was over $1000.00. The next week, she was informed that she has a rare form of cancer called Peritoneal cancer. It was found on the uterus that was removed during the hysterectomy and had begun in the colon. It had spread to the abdominal lining, also. It was stage 4 when they found it in October 2015. This explained the severe pain she was experiencing after the hysterectomy. In the past 7 months, Melissa had been receiving chemotherapy every other week. In February, the scans showed her cancer to be inactive. Unfortunately the most recent scans show that the cancer has grown in the colon. The next move is for her to have a surgery called Hipec, which is an 8 to 12 hour surgery to remove the cancer and then run heated chemotherapy through the cavity. This is a rare procedure and the doctor that is willing to perform the surgery is "out of network ." At this time, she is over $6000.00 in debt and looking at surgery costs of around $100,000. This does not include the minimum 2 weeks hospital stay, anesthesia, medicines, and other costs of the procedure and hospital stay.
