Certificate of Citizenship

Many of my friends know my mom, Linda, but you may not know her crazy birth certificate story. My mom was born in Ontario, Canada and brought to live in the US at the age of 6 weeks old. Back when she was born, you could come and go across the border as you please, so there's no record of her "immigrating". Unfortunately, my grandparents never registered her birth and it took many(50 plus years) of working to finally get her short form birth certificate. My gram was a Canadian citizen and my grandfather was a US citizen, so mom is legally a US citizen by birthright. She has lived here her entire life, went to school here and became a registered nurse and worked here her whole life. She pays taxes and votes, but none of that matters when it comes to getting her US passport because her birth certificate isn't proof enough. I've worked for the past 2 years to get the proper long form birth certificate for her, and FINALLY, it's on its way in the mail! But now, that's not even enough to get her passport. She also has to apply for a certificate of citizenship. Doesn't sound too bad, except the fee is over $1100. It must be paid in whole, and is non-refundable. My mom is an amazing woman who has done anything for her kids and grandsons. She will give you the clothes off her back. She deserves to have this certificate and even more so deserves to take a trip she has always wanted. I am determined to take her on that trip once we get her passport. But honestly, even if she doesn't get to go on a trip, my mom at least deserves to have this certificate. That physical proof of citizenship that she rightfully deserves!
