Save the Troop 5 Boy Scout Hut

My name Robbie Thomas, I am a Forestry student at the University of Georgia. I have many passions but something that has been a part of my life since I was in 1st grade is Boy Scouts. For 15 years now, scouting has been a part of my life. I am an Eagle Scout and I love everything that the Scouts stand for. Nine months ago I was driving through Macon during my Christmas break and I noticed an old Scout hut with a hole in the door. I had never stepped foot in that building before that day but as soon as I opened the door I knew that I had to save it. The vines were growing through the windows, there was dirt everywhere and nature was starting to take hold. For the next three weeks I spent every available moment I had repairing and cleaning the Scout hut and surrounding property.
I was able to get in touch with the one other person in the world who still noticed it and had been keeping an eye on it for 10 years since the last Scout Troop folded in 2005. We have been on the search to get a new troop to move in but have not had any luck yet. With the building structurally sound we thought we had time. However, Last week the City of Macon decided that it was an "Eyesore" and was of no use anymore. It is slated to be torn down in late September to make more room for the park improvments next door. This building has been a landmark in the City and community since 1933 and myself and many others are now racing against the clock to save it. At the moment, we are looking at moving the building to another location in the City as that seems the only option since the City owns the land it currently sits on and has no problem tearing it down. This money will go towards placing the building on a public piece of property and and in will no way help any private individuals.
I never attended a meeting in this Scout Hut. But as an Eagle Scout and lover of history I can only begin to imagine the number of boys who learned how to serve their country and be morally outstanding citizens in this small building. By helping our campaign you will not just be saving an old building. You will saving a piece of history that represents everything that has always been great about this Country. On behalf of the citizens of Macon and Boy Scouts everywhere, I thank you.
