Support Mariel’s fight against Brain Cancer
On May 3, 2021, my older sister, Mariel Aficial Tojino, had to be transported by ambulance to Sharp Grossmont Hospital. She underwent an emergency procedure to remove a 4cm brain tumor, the size of a golf ball, which affected her speech, behavior and mental clarity. As you can imagine, the days leading up to and immediately after the procedure were incredibly stressful for the entire family. This unexpected event and devastating diagnosis of Stage IV brain cancer has turned our world upside-down…. but hope and optimism remain strong.Since the surgery, Mariel has made great progress in her recovery through speech and occupational therapies. She has been gaining strength and will begin radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy in the coming weeks to treat the 3 smaller tumors in her brain. We are researching local resources and the internet for alternative treatments to ensure she gets an edge in this fight. Mariel is not ready to stop being a loving wife to Arnold, dedicated mother to her young daughters Aloha and Makena, supportive stepmother to new high school graduate, Delaney, active parent at the Zamorano Fine Arts Academy, and active member of the community at large. She is a dear friend and family member with the most generous heart❤️ EVER!
As many of you know, Mariel is so willing to help others. It's simply in her nature to nurture. She gives what she can, she serves who she can, she WILL make time for family and friends! She will take on responsibilities because she wants to make a difference...and has certainly made a difference to so many. If her daily tasks of helping others isn't complete, she fills in the gap by spreading positive, encouraging messages on Facebook. Her spiritual foundation has always been strong and unwavering. I'm always in awe how she does it. How does she do it!! She is our Rock!We are now reaching out for donations to help her fight against this cancer. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will go towards incurred expenses not covered by insurance. These include: radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, medication and special accommodations for the home. On behalf of our family, we are extremely grateful for your generosity and support during this difficult time. We’ll update this page with ongoing news of Mariel’s journey. Please pray for her and her family as they navigate through this chapter in their lives.
With Love and Gratitude,
Michelle
