Sonny’s Surgeries

Aŋpétu wašté!
Hello everyone! I am fundraising for my son Nicholas aka “Sonny Boy” or “Sonny”. Sonny was born with the more severe type of Spina Bifida (myelomeningocele) and hydrocephalus as well as a chiari malformation. Spina bifida comes with its challenges as it has affected a lot of his nerves which left him without feeling in his lower extremities. This has also caused issues with his bowel and bladder. Sonny will be undergoing two surgeries this summer (July 12th) at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. These surgeries will improve the quality of life for Sonny. The two surgeries that he will go through are the mitrofanoff procedure and the “ace procedure”. Along with the follow-ups and regular check-ups, we will also be returning to Sioux Falls for frequent visits in monitoring a syrinx that has formed in Sonny’s upper spinal cord. This syrinx has caused regression in Sonny’s progress with his fine motor skills and arm strength (he does crawl and use a wheelchair). If the syrinx progresses, neurosurgery will be needed but for now it will be monitored by the neurosurgeon and his team.
The funds raised will be of great help. Sonny loves his siblings and it is our goal to ensure that his siblings and family are close during these times. The funds raised will help cover lodging, fuel, and food. We will be forever grateful for any contribution. Thank you!
