My name is Scott Dueker and I am a doctoral student in Special Education at the Ohio State University. I'm raising money to attend a conference in Australia in September.
I conduct research using a behavioral technique called video prompting to help students with moderate to severe intellectual and developmental disabilities to learn new skills. I also have an interest in bringing behavior analytic services to countries that do not have a strong tradition.
Recently, my proposal for a presentation on my research was accepted by the annual conference for the Association for Behaviour Analysis Australia . This takes place in Melbourne on September 24 and 25 this year. The acceptance was unexpected since I am not from Australia. Because the submission and acceptance dates were so close to the conference date, finding funding for travel through my school has been difficult. This is a wonderful opportunity to disseminate ABA research to an audience that does not have the tradition that we have in the United States. I love presenting at conferences and have done so on multiple occasions domestically.
All funds raised through this campaign will be used to purchase round trip airfare (approximately $2000), hotel for 3 days (approximately $125 per day), for meals, and ground transportation. I am still looking at funding from the school and would use those funds first if available. Any remaining funds will go toward other future conferences. I'd like to end the campaign by Labor day to ensure that all the reservations are made.
Australia has a poor history with Applied BehaviorAnalysis, but people there are working hard at changing the culture. I want to be a part of that movement. By presenting at the convention as an outsider, I believe I can help lend some influence to the cause. Someday, I hope to take an academic position there to teach behavior analytic skills to prospective teachers. This conference is the stepping stone to greater things.
Any help toward this goal would be greatly appreciated. It was a difficult decision to go this route because I generally like to do things on my own. But because of the short timelines, I felt I had no other options since the school funding deadlines require much more notice. It will be a wonderful opportunity to share my knowledge and learn about a different culture. Thank you for considering my cause.
