Stay in School GH

A United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) report estimates 1.36 million children in Ghana do not have proper access to education. Our mission is to make Education a basic right, not a privilege, and help children to stay in school!

The Ghanaian government boosted its national educational program by adopting The Ghanaian Education Reform of 2007. This program was responsible for introducing Universal Basic Education, which encompasses free tuition for:

- A two-year kindergarten program

- A six-year curriculum for primary school

- A three-year Junior High School program

Despite the efforts by the Ghanaian government, to improve its education, approximately 1.36 million eligible Ghanaian children are not enrolled in school. The issue that contributes most significantly to why many children living in Ghana are not in school is Poverty. Many parents are not in the position to provide or purchase school materials like textbooks, note-books, writing supplies and school uniforms even after the children were allowed to attend school for free at the kindergarten levels. The issue of survival is more urgent for many families and as a result parents must choose buying food, medicine and other basic life necessities for their children at the expense of buying school materials if there is money.

Additionally, many schools have little to no resources to provide adequate instruction. Items such as tables, writing boards, desks, writing materials, chairs, teaching aids, and the like are scarce and often unavailable. This contributes to the low morale and lack of motivation of many parents and therefore their children when it comes to education in Ghana.

In the small village of Bokankye, Kumasi, Ghana approximately 1200 of the nearly 3000 kindergarten and primary school age children don’t attend school for the abovementioned reasons. For these children ~$100 can cover expenses for an entire semester (There are 3 semesters in a school year).

Stay in School, would like to raise funds to continue providing school supplies and other school-related necessities for children in Bokankye, Ghana and eventually to other rural areas. Along with enhancing the library by providing more books, and other resources such as computers to help advance the minds of the children through more interactive and engaging tools; the advantage of using technology allows flexibility and adaptability to differentiated learning, allowing children to progress quickly in a world where computer usage is so critical.

Stay in School was founded by Mr. Thomas Osei in the Spring 2016. The mission of Stay in School is to seek local and international assistance to provide counseling, education, financial and moral support for children in Ghana. Since the organization’s inception, it has raised nearly $5000 to help children of Bokankye with school materials and ultimately stay in school to further their education. Atwimaman children’s library, co-founded by Mr. Osei, was completed in 2007 and contains shelves of books and resources at the disposal of the children in Bokankye has helped many children to continue learning, fostering better literacy skills.
Children are our Hope for the future: therefore, let us encourage the children to love to read and to excel in education. Because without education there is no future. We invite you to be part of this unique and humanitarian Mission.

Can you help eradicate the vicious cycle of illiteracy and lack of education leading to further poverty? Can you help create a brighter future for the children of Ghana, one student at a time?  All it takes is a few clicks of a button.
