We had an urgent shout out last week from a small Protectora inland Alicante that is closing down.
It's ran by a small association and due to lack of volunteers it has become impossible to continue.
We got in the car and drove straight there and what we saw broke our hearts.
The building is an old chicken shed, it's concrete with small windows and cold and dark, I thought it was a prison at first glance.
4 dogs are left, 2 bonded pairs and have been here for 11 years as they entered as new born puppies. 1 has high Leish and is blind with sores on his legs. One shy and the others just old joints.
We have been given all the fencing from inside and outside of the building and all kennels, food bowls, in fact everything.
I feel so much for this group of volunteers who have tried so hard to care and find homes for dogs for over 20 years and I also how much it must hurt to stop doing it.
BUT, times are hard and who wants old sick dogs?
Well, looks like I do as I have agreed to take them all and it's urgent to get them here to start a new life with us.
The plan will be to fence off another terrace below all the existing fences. To partition into 2 and to place a wooden house in each area with a sofa, carpet, concrete outside and shade etc. I don't expect to re-home these 2 bonded pairs but I want to have the second best place I can.
I've cried lots since Friday and I'm crying again whilst I write this. I know they have been fed and cared for BUT I want to do better. Who can help?
