Fourteen years ago we lost someone very near to our hearts to suicide.
Some days 14 years feels like 40, and some days 14 years feels like yesterday. Ian was an amazing friend, a beloved son, insanely smart, funny and very handsome. Anyone who knew him, knew how wonderful he was; he had so many friends. Unfortunately, he didn't see any of those qualities within himself. He carried around a deep, dark depression that he never shared; even with those closest to him. It’s hard to believe that someone this special, someone this awesome to so many, is gone, because no one talked enough about depression and the lasting impact of suicide.
Since 2002, Ian’s family and a great group of friends and loved ones, have contributed so much time and energy to bring about awareness. Mental Health awareness; in all its capacity and complexity. We have created the Ian Oliu Foundation, with Ian’s spirit in our hearts, to raise money to bring about educational initiatives and resources to help anyone who may be contemplating suicide. As a result of our successful fundraisers, we have given so much on a local level, to bring light to suicide prevention within our community, and especially with school aged youths.
We're now broadening our scope across multiple generations, to include various mental health issues which affect people in all walks of life. The Ian Oliu Foundation will be implementing a grant process open to schools and other organizations wishing to use the funds for Mental Health programs and initiatives.
Our hope is to make a difference while ensuring that Ian's memory lives on in all of our efforts.
