Tess Taking on the World Challenge Trip - November 2017 to Cambodia and Vietnam
I have been chosen to do the World Challenge Trip with my school, Camberwell High School, and 18 of my peers to Cambodia and Vietnam in November 2017. I am so proud to be chosen and I need your help to get there! More importantly, you can contribute to the community I am visiting.
The trip includes
- Travel to Cambodia and Vietnam
- Acclimatising to the country and culture
- Exploring the foreign terrain
- Project Work – giving back to by working on projects to enrich and develop local community
- Rest and reflect
Funding
By November 2017, we are required to raise $7,500 to fund our travels but my goal is to raise $10,000! We will be matched with a charitable organisation; who I will contribute the excess funds to.
When I was 10 I went to Bali with my parents. We enjoyed the tourist aspect of Bali as do many Australian’s but the memory seared in my mind was of three Balinese girls of about 5 years old, barely able to count and yet they were selling their hand made woven bracelets. We spent some time talking to them and I was impressed with their persistence, and ingenuity. They weren’t begging for money, they were selling a product. From then on I have dreamed of being part of a project to help communities that don’t have the same privilege as I have. To be part of the chain of generous people helping others.

My parents have tried to instill in us the philosophy that if you give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
At 16 I’m ready to make a start and I have been accepted into the World Challenge program for 2017. This is the World Challenge ethos:
We believe that life skills, such as resilience, empathy and leadership, are developed through real life experience and we enable young people to develop these key skills through powerful student-led expeditions to the developing world.
That resonates with me and I feel this could be the beginning of a really large part of my future.
One of the many things World Challenge ask of the students participating is that they raise the funds themselves and bypass the bank of mum and dad.
I work part time and plan on saving most of my pay to raise funds to do this challenge however with my schoolwork, basketball commitments and my part time work I need your help. I will work on behalf of all the people who donate to my fund to get me to Cambodia and send you a review of my time when I return.
I appreciate any amount of money you can give towards my trip.
