New State of the Arts Dance Facility

Hello, my name is Marvin Askew I am the Executive Director of the Buffalo City Ballet. The organization has been servicing the community of Buffalo for over 47 years. It is the only Ballet School in upstate New York operated by African American to provide dance opportunity to inner city children’s in the area of Classical Ballet. Buffalo City Ballet is seeking funds for our transitional operation from our current dance studio to a temporary space while we are working toward the development of our new facility. We are currently housed at the Tri-Main Center and our lease end at the fiscal year June 30th 2019. The current space is out dated. With the continuous changes in the community we are finding it is hard to service these children because they live in area well removed from the training school current location. This makes it very difficult for children’s who can afford simple bus transportation to attend classes.
1.) Your funds will help us continue to provide this service to children for families that are living pay check to pay check that simply don’t have fund to place their children in a high quality dance program.
2.) We are in phase two of the Development of a new facility; two years ago we raise funds for the conceptions design of the building. Now we are raising funds to transition out of the old building.
3.) While place in a temporary facility this will allow us to increase our student base in the community by partnering with community schools, and lecture demonstrations in the parks during the summer of 2019. This will make us more competitive in the dance environment by offering these students the opportunity to use their skills in a pre-professional setting during performances and demonstrations.

Support for Transition and Dance Facility

About the Buffalo City Ballet: This program is designed to give inner city youths from the underserved community the opportunity to take part in a comprehensive after school dance training program in the art of classical ballet. Buffalo City has provided daily classes to primarily girls between the ages 3 to 18 years of age with no prior experience in dance. Training offers a scope of cultural awareness through dance to minority youths, as well as non-minority who show an interest in learning dance. Classes will be offered in – Pre-Tots, Beginners Ballet through intermediate Ballet and boy’s ballet. Students benefit from their exposure to dance through workshops and mini performance throughout the year. Buffalo City Ballet the school youth performing company act as a vehicle for students to use their training to gain better exposure and experience during the company annual production of the Nutcracker and other productions. This program set a good example in which children develop good performance skills in front of their peers. Funding for this program is crucial to keeping service that we have been providing for the community for 47 years.

Mission Statement: “the mission of the Buffalo City Ballet is to provide low-income and minority children of Western New York with few economic, academic and social opportunities with the ability to foster artistry, person growth and confidence through the rigorous discipline of Classical Ballet”.
