Hi! My name is Lisa Stang and I am a Visual Arts teacher. I was hired by View Park High School, part of ICEFPS (inner city education foundation public schools) with only 2 months remaining to the end of the school year 2015-2016. They had lost 2 Arts teachers in one year, I believe in part to the lack of resources for the arts classes. I went in those last 2 months and started an extensive color theory and painting curriculum. It took a chunk of money out of pocket on my part to supply it, but I knew it was what was needed to make the classes productive and functioning. I was hired on for this school year too.
This year I will be teaching AP Art History, Advanced Art and 5 classes of intro to Visual Arts. I have an extensive, project based curriculum prepared for this year that will require money for suplies beyond the $2000 that my position is allotted. In prepping my curriculum I realized I will need to come out of pocket to supply all of the projects I have planned. I am not a pencil and paper-draw-only kind of Art teacher. I am a sculpt, photograph, edit, weave, paint, mold and carve kind of teacher. I have set a monthly sum from my salary to cover these additional supply costs. However, I am realizing that I need a class set of laptops for my AP Art History class, as well as for many of the projects in my Advanced and Intro Art classes, and this I will not be able to cover out of pocket. Hence, this fund. School starts August 15. The AP course has 250 art works that need to be researched over the year. We need to research 5 every class. Starting on day 1. My total goal is to have a computer for every student in a class of 35. This will give my students the ability to discover and share as groups the information they learn, not just sit there and hear lecture. This will give them the opportunity to create and manipulate their own art work and create variations of it in editing programs. My students will be grateful for a resource that will truly enhance their educations, and I will be truly grateful for the help in making my classes exciting, productive and cutting edge.
