Healing through Education

Nechi Institute:  Centre of Indigenous Learning (Nechi) is a non-profit Indigenous educational institution founded in 1974. It has an all-Indigenous Board of Governors and it is located in St. Albert, Alberta, Canada.  Nechi’s main focus is to deliver cultural based enriched courses in the areas of substance abuse, addictions, residential school trauma, suicide prevention, and cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity workshops.  

Who enrols in our courses, wellness programs, and speciality workshops?

·        Professional people, nurses, social workers, educators, police, people in the health profession

·        First Nations Chief, Councillors and staff

·        People interested in learning about addictions

·        People interested in cross-cultural values

·        People interested in self-improvement through Indigenous cultural experiential learning

·        First Nation members interested in pursuing social work or training in addictions

·        Schools, provincial government, local government agencies

In 2011 the government of Canada transferred our core funding dollars to a non-Indigenous college. This was huge financial blow to our institution, and since then Nechi has not received any government funding to offset our administration costs.  Nechi’s continued existence is due to the continual enrolment of students in our diploma courses, accredited courses, and as well as Nechi delivering off-campus speciality courses and programs directly on First Nation reserves.  A small component of our funding is also derived from charitable donations.

Since 1974, Nechi has had a commitment to the revitalization of Indigenous languages and cultures, and does this by incorporating strong Indigenous cultural content and traditions into all course materials and workshops. Nechi’s courses utilize an experiential model where students can awaken their spirit, the source of our collective wellbeing, for a transformational learning experience.

We need your help to supplement our core program funding dollars so that we can continue delivering tailored wellness programs, accredited courses and workshops.

Your generous donation will be used to reserve training seats for healing work to address intergenerational trauma and the unhealthy behaviours that addictions causes.  You will be helping to give back to our students the greatest gift they could ever receive: control over their own lives.  Nechi greatly appreciates your support.
