Obbie Schoeman Burial Fund
Donation protected
My father Obbie Schoeman passed away July 24th. His health had been steadily deteriorating this year but his passing was sudden and unexpected. Though I tried to get to Los Angeles from KC, unfortunately I didn't make it there in time.
My father had been very independent and somewhat private. I had been led to believe that he was in good shape financially and that all his funeral expenses had been prepaid. Unfortunately this was not the case.
Though he had a good retirement income, he had been very generous with the people he worked with and loved such as the California Counsel of the Blind. He made some large donations on credit thinking he had plenty of time to pay it off.
Also he had just moved into an assisted living facility and though he had long term care insurance, they require you to pay the first 3 months yourself which took almost all of his monthly income. He passed away just shy of the 90 days and his next month's income leaving him broke.
We also discovered that only the burial plot had been prepaid and the cremation expenses fell to us - $3500. It was a shock. I had been telling everyone to not worry about expenses, that I would pay them back when we got access to Dad's accounts. Actually, I had intended to share what money he had. I knew it wouldn't be enough to change anyone's life but a little something to acknowledge their love & care all these years when I couldn't be there because he lived in L.A. and I lived in K.C.
I was also counting on some help from him as well since I have been flying out every other month when he was in the hospital and then all the last minute flights for my family when he passed. Our credit is maxed out.
So here I am asking for help. I know that Dad would hate asking as much as I do but I've been encouraged to start this GoFundMe. We have 50 days to pay off the cremation bill before they start charging interest.
I thank you in advance for your generousity. I am truly thankful for all the love and support we have already received during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
