Lorain Lighthouse Preservation Fund

The Lorain Lighthouse Foundation, Inc.  is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 1989 by a group of civic leaders seeking to prevent the dismantling of the Historic Lorain Lighthouse and then working to preserve the lighthouse as a unique part of our local history.

The Lorain Lighthouse is on the National Register of Historical Places and is recognized by the Lorain County Preservation Network as a Lorain County Landmark. The Lighthouse is also a member of The Northeast Ohio Inter Museum Council.

The Lorain Lighthouse will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary on June 30th, 2017.  It was decommissioned in 1965 and scheduled for demolition in 1989 and was saved when a private group agreed to take ownership of the lighthouse.

Restoration projects completed so far are:
     1. New slate roof,
     2. Exterior stucco repair and repaint,
     3. Window replacement,
     4. LED flood lights,
     5. Volunteers replacing electrical wiring,
     6.  Replacing 2nd floor maple hardwood floor and baseboards,
     7.  Interior doors , pantry and fog horn cabinet

The lighthouse has been refurnished with 1950 period furniture as it was when the coast guard maned it.   We have also reaquired and refurbished the original fourth order Fresnel lens which was installed in 1932.   All this was achieved by our working, non-payed all volunteer board, doing fund raisers, seeking donations and receiving some grant money.

Just to keep the lighthouse open for tours during the summer costs a little over $24,000 per year with insurance being over 50%of the cost.  We raise about $10,000 per year with fund raisers, tours and donations
leaving us short about $14,000 per year. We are currently running short of money and may not be able to celebrate our 100th Anniversary with out the help of donors who care about preserving this lighthouse. The funds will be used to subsidize operations and also for continued maintenance.  We have preserved and refurbished the Lighthouse for the past 28 years with untold thousands of labor hours of volunteers and donations.

We are asking for your help to keep our "Jewel of the Port" open to the public for all to see and visit.  We and the community will be forever grateful for all of your support.  Please help!

Thank you!

Sincerely,
