In Support of Buckwheat Zydeco
Stanley Dural, Jr., famously known internationally as Buckwheat Zydeco, is a Living Legend, a Grammy and Emmy award - winning artist who has dedicated his life to his family, his friends and his music. So when the Friends of Buckwheat, a small but mighty group of zydeco artists and close family friends heard he was ill and in need, we didn't miss a beat to mobilize and become part of this important effort in concert with his family.
Over the years, Buckwheat has given of himself so generously to many in his own community, to a countless number of individuals in need as well as to charities and non-profit organizations. If Buck got wind of someone struggling, without request, he was there to lend a helping hand; buy groceries, pay a bill or put gas in someone’s vehicle. He's also lent his talent to countless causes, performing at events around the country without compensation. He's mentored several generations of zydeco artists to ensure that the Creole culture and thriving zydeco music community he helped build, lives on. It stands to reason that we’d want to give back to him for all that he’s given to us, right? We think so too!
In 2010 Buckwheat received a Grammy for his album titled "Lay Your Burden Down”. Now, Buckwheat needs us to help him “lay his burden down”. He needs us so he can focus on one thing only: getting well. This effort will help him bear the burden of medical expenses and cancer treatment as these funds will be used to defray the high costs of medical care, that even with health insurance are great. Due to his illness, he’s been unable to work for several months while undergoing treatment for lung cancer. His home also incurred damaged from the recent historical floods. So, whether you know him personally and he touched your life in some special way, or just know of him as someone who put a song in your heart or helped you discover this joyful music, please join us by giving back to this great man as he continues on his journey. For administrative purposes, Tomorrow Dural, Stanley & Bernite's daughter will be withdrawing the funds on behalf of her parents, again shouldering more responsibility so they can focus on the health and healing process.
For those who don’t know about his long, accomplished and storied career, let us get you up to speed. Since 1971 he’s toured and performed professionally all over the world. He’s performed, recorded and collaborated with many notable artists in country music, rock and roll, blues, funk and soul - artists like Eric Clapton, U2, Los Lobos, Trombone Shorty, Dwight Yoakum and Willie Nelson, as their equal. Buckwheat Zydeco is one of Louisiana’s most treasured cultural ambassadors and favorite sons! He and his band mates have performed at several presidential inaugurations, at the 1996 U.S Summer Olympic closing ceremonies, with The Boston Pops for a Fourth of July TV special, in numerous feature films and many times on late night talk shows like David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon. His repertoire of recordings include two CD's for children/families.
And did we mention what a dedicated father and husband he is? Even though he’s toured extensively, traveling for weeks at a time, making great sacrifices being away from loved ones, his family was always top priority. At all times his wife and children were in his head and heart as a hands-on kind of father, actively parenting his children even far from home. He's a doting grandfather, a devoted brother to his siblings, a loyal husband to Bernite, his wife of 40 years and as her partner in parenting children of his combined family as if they were his own.
This is the man, the artist and our friend who needs us.
We are grateful beyond words for your kind and generous support.
