Fashionette's CNA Training

Donation protected
Fashionette Bivins begins a full-time Certified Nursing Assistant training program at the Milwaukee Center for Independence on September 12th, and she needs your help!

I hope to raise $1,000 to cover her tuition and state testing fee.  This certification is the next step in Fashionette securing a more stable, legitimate living wage.

I met Fashionette Bivins as a child when she entered my third grade classroom in 1998.  As I learned more about her and her family, we developed a bond that spilled over into weekend outings and time spent with my own family.

Over the years, I have observed Fashionette's milestones:  graduating from  8th grade, working her first job at 15, having the courage to move in with relative strangers across the state in an attempt to escape negative influences, falling in love, earning her GED, supporting herself in her first apartment, completing various job-related classes and certifications, and making it work for the last 27 years!

However, I have also witnessed the countless, and sometimes overwhelming, challenges that Fashionette has to navigate every day.  The heartbreak of people she loves being incarcerated and letting her down, the addiction that affects many of her family members, the evictions, the insurmountable hospital bills when she's been without accessible health insurance, the lost jobs over lack of transportation, and the lack of resources as a single, childless young woman.  In Fashionette's most vulnerable, depressed moments, I simply get texts that read, "Ms. Lathrop, I'm tired."

Only those who must navigate the world from a place of poverty, where injustice and intolerance are daily forces, truly understand the effort and energy it takes for Fashionette to keep her head above water.  But I've tried to grasp this reality, and I hope I've sufficiently been able to describe the spirit of Fashionette Bivins-- perseverent, determined, compassionate, and courageous.  I love her like no other and am asking for your help on her behalf.

I appreciate your consideration, and I have faith that she will make it out of this vicious cycle.
