Help Us Present Our Science at AGU

Donation protected

I am the current lead student of the Malcolm X Shabazz High School Biogeochemistry Team and we have done a lot of primary enzyme research during the last 4 years.  Our collaborators at the University of Tennessee are publishing their manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal based in large part on data we collected. My abstract as lead author has just been accepted in the Bright Stars Student program at the AGU December 2016 conference in San Francisco, so we are raising funds to enable me, another student, and our teacher to attend the conference and present our results. The response in the first week has been so overwhelming and the number of students who have shown interest in participating encourages us to expand our funding request for 10 students and 4 chaperones. The protocol has expanded to 10 times the data sets we've previously acquired in our other field studies so the additional students will come in handy.  We need the funds by Sept 30th to book flights and hotel rooms.

This is huge for us. We are a Title I school with very limited resources. As far as any of us knows, no Newark Public School has ever done anything even close to something like this.  We really don't have STEM-oriented role models outside of a few teachers who have gone above and beyond to give us an opportunity to shine.

We expect to share our AGU conference experience with other schools and students within or outside our district.  It's a once in a lifetime experience that you will be funding for us.
